The short answer

A data protection assessment documents what personal information a system uses, why, who receives it, what could go wrong, and which safeguards are in place. For a credit union, AI systems that handle member information, such as a member service chatbot, are a good place to start. This filled-in example shows the level of detail examiners and auditors expect.

Frequently asked questions

Are credit unions required to complete these assessments?

Some state privacy laws require data protection assessments for certain processing, though GLBA exemptions may apply. Even where not required, a completed assessment is strong evidence of oversight for examiners and auditors.

How is this different from an AI impact assessment?

An impact assessment focuses on the AI system’s effects on people and decisions; a data protection assessment focuses on personal information. Many credit unions combine them for AI systems.
